Frequently asked questions

Application Process
When should I apply for the academy?
Apply as soon as possible. Some consideration in the ranking process is given for the date the application is received.
What information should I review before applying?
Consider reviewing the National Park Service Medical Standards (RM-57A). Along with reviewing the medical standards and requirements form AZ POPAT and AZ POST.
There are also some NPS videos about the NPS Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services (LESES) Division here and here that are worth watching. This NPS video is about veterans working for the agency. If possible, consider doing a “ride along” with a law enforcement professional and ask lots of questions about the job!
What happens next?
Your application will be ranked on factors that consider student status, quality of your written responses, quality of your resume, your education and experience, and your certifications (e.g., EMT, wildland fire). The academy director may request a copy of your resume after reviewing your application submitted online. You may also be provided with a medical exam form for completion before the academy begins.

Credit or Non-Credit
What’s the credit option?
The credit option is perfect for those working toward an undergraduate degree. It is 12 credit hours toward graduation and requires admission to the university and payment of tuition. There is also the ability to earn a Certificate in Park Protection.
What’s the non-credit option?
Great for those that already have an undergraduate degree. In many cases, this is a less expensive alternative. Admission to the university is not required, only an application directly to the program.

Academy Cost and Financial Aid
How much does the academy cost?
The cost of the academy depends on if you choose the credit option versus the non-credit option. For degree seeking students the cost is that for a full-time semester. For non- degree seeking students the tuition is currently $8,500.
What do the fees and tuition cover?
All textbooks, equipment, and ammunition required for the academy. Neither tuition nor the non-credit fee cover uniforms, housing, meals or transportation. These are the responsibility of the student.
Is financial aid available?
Financial aid may be available for the college credit option.
What do uniforms costs?
The uniform consists of a PRLEA polo shirt and NPS pants and boots. The approximate cost for these items is between $150-300 depending on the number of items ordered.
Will the GI Bill cover academy expenses?
Yes. The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs regional office has approved the PRLEA for GI Bill coverage.

Fall or Spring Semester?
How long is the academy?
